When I woke up this morning, I felt like a fraud. I just had a post featured on SheKnows and, because of that, I was invited to become a SheKnows Expert. Ordinarily this would have me over the moon!
But, I’ve had a horrible cold for a week and can barely string together a couple of coherent words, let alone an entire sentence. How can I be an expert when I don’t have a word left in me on day two of NaBloPoMo?
On top of that, someone unfollowed me on Instagram. I must need to do something different so people don’t leave me. This other crocheter I know is selling tons of hats, just like the ones I make. Why aren’t people buying mine? My work must suck. I don’t have anything to write today. Calling myself a writer is a lie.
Sad truth time: The voice in my head is a Mean Girl. Sometimes I just want to punch her. She’s petty and jealous and never hesitates to share the most awful thing on her mind.
I bet you have days like this too. You might even have a Mean Girl or Bully who lives in your head, someone always willing to tell you you’re not good enough. Writers and creatives are especially susceptible to voices like this taking up residence in our brains.
So much of what we do is for other people. For better or for worse, we care what people think. BUT, we don’t have to care what our inner critic thinks.
The best way to keep that voice quiet is to drown it out by saying nice things to ourselves.
I really needed someone to hug me and say nice things this morning. There weren’t strangers in my bathroom waiting to pay me compliments, so getting to a better place was on me.
So, I created 7 mini inspiration printables to scatter around my house.
Since we all could use someone to tell us we’re awesome and to cheer us on to the finish line, I’m sharing them with you. These are free to use as you wish! Scatter them around the house like I did, stick them in an envelope and leave them somewhere for a stranger, or fold them into a paper airplane and fly them down the hall to your work BFF. A link to the PDF is down at the bottom.
Whoops! I accidentally made eight because I just remembered another favorite expression!
My wish for you today is that if you feel a struggle coming on – pause, take a deep breath, and dig back in.
