AmiguruME: Bernie Sanders Edition

December 6, 2015 by Jennifer 2 Comments

Hey y’all!

I have been hook hook hooking away on a new little project!  Well, like ten new little projects, one of which is not so little, but who is counting this is the time of year for CRAZYPANTS ALL THE THINGS am I right?  I am running around like a loon now that my weird bout with vertigo is under control, and am overjoyed to be reunited with my yarn again!  =)

Have you seen Allison Hoffman’s awesomesauce book AmiguruME?  She is awesome and her book is amazeballs!  I picked this book up a couple of years ago with the intention of making something I don’t even remember what, and then looked at the instructions and got all overwhelmed with options and put it on my shelf and forgot about it.

DON’T do what I did.  It makes your crochet books sad.

I got a wild hair to hook up Bernie Sanders a while ago, and finally worked up the courage (aided by a glass or two of a lovely cab) to start.  Luckily I am a yarn hoarder have a few skeins of yarn which by no means take up hundreds of square feet in our house so I had everything I needed right in my stash.  So far I am using a mix of acrylics and wool, and have no idea what I am going to use to make his hair…so we’ll see.

We had a little mishap with the neck, which is why you should read pattern instructions all the way through before you begin a project.  Again, don’t do what I do.  I make mistakes so you don’t have to.  There is this thing about finishing the whole body all the way through the collar, and then going back in and crocheting the neck…and it didn’t matter how many times I read it after it was too late, I can’t figure out how I might have done that differently while that piece was in progress.  I spent a few nights thinking about it, and figure the next time I do this, I’ll stop working on the shirt at the appropriate spot, make the neck, and then finish the shirt, because that is the only thing that makes sense.  But this all sounds like gibberish so next go I’ll take photos and show you what I mean.

ANYWAY.

I ended up working Bernie’s neck separately and stitching it in after the fact, which was a little fidgety but I don’t think you can tell.

Making his little tie and stitching on the stripes was oh so much fun!  That little tie kills me every time I pick it up!

It has been slow going because I’m still getting up to speed on life stuff now that I am up and at ’em again.  Bernie is just waiting for his suit coat (in progress) and some kicks, and then the funfunfun of making this oddly generic fellow into The Bern.

I CANNOT WAIT.

Also I have no idea what I am doing.
