How to Make a Crochet Pokemon Go Hair Clip – New Free Pattern!

July 16, 2016 by Jennifer 4 Comments

Are you playing Pokemon Go?  I LOVE it!  When I first started playing I had an idea — I needed a crochet Pokemon Go hair clip to warn everyone around me not to step on the nearby monsters I was trying to catch!  And also to explain what I was doing wandering around the neighborhood while staring at my phone, in case the neighbors weren’t up on the new game yet.  😉

Pokemon Go - Bellsprout

Would you like one, too?  I played around a little bit and came up with a quick pattern, which I am happy to share!

(P.S.  I’m compiling a list of the best crochet Pokemon patterns and will be posting that early next week…but there are some gaping holes in the list of first generation Pokemon – it doesn’t look like there are patterns for a bunch of them!  If you have a free pattern for a Pokemon and would like to be included in my roundup post, please send me your link or drop it in the comments.)

Materials Needed:

  • Red, white, and black worsted weight yarn (I used I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby, which is the absolute best for this sort of thing!)
  • Black felt
  • Black embroidery floss
  • A barrette or hair clip (I used Scunci clips)
  • About 30 minutes

How to Crochet Pokemon Go Hair Clip:

  • First you’ll make two semicircles (one red, one white):
    • Ch 2
    • DC 8 into second ch from hook
    • SC 1, turn, {SC, inc.} across
    • Bind off and weave in ends
  • Next you’ll add the point for the map pin:
    • Sl st white yarn to 5th SC on the curved part of the semicircle
    • Ch 5, turn
    • Sl st into the second ch from hook, then SC, HDC, DC
    • Sl st into the 2nd SC from where you first joined the yarn
    • Bind off, stitch the DC to the stitch between the two places the yarn was sl st to the semicircle, and weave in ends
  • Next you’ll make the white circle for the center of the Pokeball:
    • Make a magic loop, and SC 6 into ML
    • Join black yarn, and {sl st, inc} around
    • Bind off and weave in ends
  • Then we join everything together!
    • With black yarn, SC the white and red semicircles together along the straight edges, and then SC evenly around the outside edges
    • Using embroidery floss, stitch the white circle to the center of the Pokeball
    • Cut out a piece of black felt for the backing, and stitch the barrette to the felt using embroidery floss
    • Use embroidery floss to attach the crochet to the felt
  • Finally, wear it while hunting for Pokemon!

I hope you like this pattern and catch all of the Pokemon!
