Did you get to enjoy a Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino?
Alas, I totally missed out. *kicksrocks* But, I’m putting on my Optimistic Pants™ and hoping Starbucks brings this drink back for all of the brokenhearted kiddos (and grownups like me) who didn’t manage to get their mitts on this fruity sugar bomb in a cup.
If you didn’t get to enjoy a Unicorn Frappuccino either, you can still have an Instagram worthy beverage that a) has zero calories; b) never melts; c) smiles back at you; and d) can be had without waiting in a mahoosive line. With a little yarn, a plastic cup, and some miscellaneous odds and ends, a crochet Unicorn Frappuccino can be yours in a couple of hours!
To Make a Crochet Unicorn Frappuccino, You’ll Need:
- Unicorn Frappuccino flavored worsted weight yarn (I used some pink, turquoise, and white I Love This Yarn)
- Skein of pink variegated embroidery floss
- Small bit of black embroidery floss
- Size G and E crochet hooks
- 12mm safety eyes
- Stuffing
- 1 16 oz. plastic cup
- Drinking straw
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is written using US crochet terms, and is worked in continuous rounds (2 pieces – the cup and the whipped cream). It’s easy enough for a beginner – the trickiest part is joining the whipped cream to the cup.
First: Crochet the Cup
The crochet Unicorn Frappuccino is worked from bottom of cup to top.
- With pink yarn, make a magic loop, sc 6 into ML (6)
- inc around (12)
- sc, inc around (18)
- sc 2, inc around (24)
- sc 3, inc around (30)
- In back loops only, sc around (30)
- sc around (30)
- sc around (30)
- sc 4, inc around (36)
- sc around (36)
- sc around (36)
- sc 5, inc around (42)
- sc around (42)
- sc around (42)
- sc around (42)
- sc around (42)
- sc around (42)
- [sl st, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st], repeat [ ] around (42)
- Join turquoise yarn; hdc, sc, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, [dc, hdc, sc, sl st, sc, hdc, dc], repeat [ ] to last stitch, dc (42)
- [sl st, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st], repeat [ ] around (42)
- Break turquoise yarn and join pink yarn; hdc, sc, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, [dc, hdc, sc, sl st, sc, hdc, dc], repeat [ ] to last stitch, dc (42)
- sc around (42)
- sc around (42)
- Break yarn and weave in ends.
Second: Make The Face
- Carefully cut the top of your plastic cup off so that it is even with the top of your crochet cup. I cut my cup along this line:
- Decide where you’d like to place the safety eyes, and push a pen through the spaces to mark the spots on the cup where you’ll need to poke holes for the posts.
- Insert safety eyes and stitch the mouth and any other details.
- Poke small holes through your cup (I used a corkscrew).
- Lining up the holes with the safety eye posts, place the plastic cup inside the crochet cup. This will be a tight fit (you want it to be snug, not floppy around the cup) so you may have to do a little gentle stretching and tugging to get the cup all the way in.
Third: Crochet the Whipped Cream
Worked from the top of whipped cream to the bottom. hdc inc = work 2 hdc into same stitch (being super specific for clarity 😉)
- With white yarn, make a magic loop, sc 6 into ML (6)
- From this point forward, work all stitches in the back loops only.
- hdc two sts into each st around (12)
- hdc, hdc inc around (18)
- hdc, hdc inc around (27)
- hdc 2, hdc inc around (36)
- hdc around (36)
- [5 hdc, hdc inc] x 6 (42)
- [3 hdc, hdc inc] x 10, 2 hdc (52)
- [4 hdc, hdc inc] x 10, 2 hdc (62)
- Do not break yarn!
- Using pink variegated embroidery floss and size E crochet hook, join floss to top center of whipped cream (leave a long enough tail to weave in).
- Following the spiral of the ridge created by crocheting in back loops, loosely sc in each stitch around the curve of the spiral. When you’re done it should look like this:
- Weave in the ends of the floss.
Last: Assembly
- You’ll notice that the whipped cream edge has 20 more stitches than the cup. This is ok!
- The best time to insert the stuffing is when the whipped cream is about ¾ of the way joined. Be sure to put enough stuffing in to fill the whipped cream! =)
- Attach the whipped cream to the top row of the cup following this pattern: sc, (1 sc, dec) x 20, sc (To decrease while you’re joining, insert the hook through the whipped cream, then through the cup; yarn over and pull yarn through both cup and whipped cream; then insert hook through next stitch in whipped cream, yarn over, and pull loop through.)
- Cut your drinking straw to the desired length and push it through one of the spaces in the whipped cream.
- Enjoy!
When I got done making my crochet Unicorn Frappuccino, I started thinking about all of the different drinks I could make with this pattern! Using coffee colored yarns, I could make my favorite: Mocha Coconut Frappuccino! Pastel green and light brown could make a Mint Chocolate Frappuccino. Light pink and white could be a strawberry cream. So. Many. Options. I am a huge fan of Frappuccinos in the summer so I expect you’ll be seeing more of these.

What’s your favorite Starbucks drink? Did you get to enjoy one of the coveted and hard to come by Unicorn Frappuccinos?
If you liked this pattern I would love it if you pinned and shared!

Ok question. Did you stuff you’re cup or did you an actual plastic cup? I know stupid question but you had shown a cup was not sure if that was to show what you eere talking about.
Hi Dawn! Yep, I put stuffing inside the cup. Helps keep the stuffing up there in the whipped cream, since there is no crochet “bottom” for that piece. Sorry that was unclear. 🙂
This is an adorable pattern! One problem, the math on the last few rows of the whipped cream is wrong. If you wanted to keep those stitch counts, it should read:
row 8: (5 hdc, hdc inc) x 6 (42)
row 9: (3 hdc, hdc inc) x 10, 2 hdc (52)
row 10: (4 hdc, hdc inc) x 10, 2 hdc (62)
Also, you can do the joining row as
sc, (1 sc, dec) x 20, sc
to make the instructions easier to follow. Lovely pattern though, I loved the idea of the thread around the top. 🙂
Oh wow, thank you for this! I’ll correct this in the pattern.
I always do simple stuff when it comes to crochet – something like this would have never crossed my mind! extremely clever. Thank you!
Thank you! =)
Oh my! This is so cute and I love the idea of putting a real cup in there! So smart!
This is so cute. I must admit I haven’t tried a unicorn frap… but this is cuter than the real thing! And I absolutely love that you put a plastic cup in. So smart!
Thank you! =)
I am having a blast making my unicorn frap. But I had a question. I haven’t decided if I just want to stuff my frap or put a cup in like you have. If I put the cup in it, how can I wash it? I like to wash my ami’s after I finish them to get rid of any oils the yarn has picked up from my hands and to make them smell good. Thank you!
Yay! Oooh, that’s a good question! I have never washed my amis so I’m not sure how to wash them. Maybe a little surface wiping if you decide to use the cup inside?
Can you please tell me the exact yarn colors you used? The pink and turquoise look too light to match your pictures. Thank you
Oh gosh, I wish I could tell you the exact colors! They were yarns I pulled out of my stash, definitely ILTY, but the bands are long gone. I am popping over to Hobby Lobby this afternoon so I’ll figure it out for you. =)
