Feel the Bern with this FREE crochet (or knitting or crafting) 8 bit chart!

February 14, 2016 by Jennifer 4 Comments

Spread the love ❤️

I am a huge politics nerd, and presidential elections are like my *football game that I can’t mention by name or I’ll get sued*.  So a lot of what I have been working on lately has been politically inspired.  I’m #feelingthebern!

Bernie Sanders amigurumi

Just before Christmas I finished a yarny Bernie Sanders, and he’s been my debate watching sidekick ever since.

So I recently learned a new crochet technique:  corner to corner crochet!  Sarah at Repeat Crafter Me posted some supercute emoji squares (which I have been working on here and there) and it hatched a little idea in my mind to design an 8 bit Bernie square.  I futzed with it for awhile and finally settled on a design, which I am thrilled to share with you for the low low price of FREE!  (I’d love it if you would take what you might have spent on a pattern purchase and donate it to Bernie’s campaign.  😉 )

I haven’t quite finished weaving in the ends on my Bernie block yet (and need to fix a few little squares that got unraveled by a mischievous cat), but man, it turned out better than I thought it would!

My afghan block was made using worsted weight yarn, and the square measures about 22” x 22”, so four of these squares would make a nice lap-sized afghan.

But why limit yourself to C2C crochet?  Mustknit on Ravelry knitted this chart and it made a 7” x 7” square, and I LOVE how it turned out:

Oh hey!  Are you on Ravelry and love Bernie too?  There is a group for that, come join us!

I think it would be fun to see Bernie Bobble Stitch…or a Feel the Bern quilt?  Mosaic tiles as a kitchen sink backsplash?  Hmmm.  Lego bricks!  A giant tray of cupcakes!  There are so many cool things that can be done with a chart!  I made one with perler beads too:

Without further ado, here ya go!

Sarah has done some great video tutorials for the corner to corner crochet technique, if you aren’t familiar with it.  It looks a little confusing at first, but once you get going it is easypeaseylemonsqueezy.

If you use these charts in a crafty way, I’d love it if you linked back to me as the designer.  Share these charts freely, like actually freely by not charging people money.  🙂 And please do show me what you make!  I’ll be adding a page to my blog this week to showcase all of the crafty Bernie goodness out there and would be happy to include your awesomeness!

Hillary fans!  Charts for HRC will be coming this week!  We Democrats are all in this together and must support each other, regardless of which candidate we favor.  Let’s do our party and our candidates proud by being a force for good and uniting for the future of our country.

Happy hooking!
