Inaugural Collectors Crew Art Buy Party

January 20, 2022 by Jennifer Leave a Comment

Whether it’s on the artist or collector side of things, women are underrepresented and undervalued in the NFT space.

A friend shared this a few weeks ago:

Art by women sells for 50% less than works by men, creating a 50% discount for women’s art at auction. Female artists accounted for just 5% of all NFT art sales. In the traditional art world, female artists represent just 2% of the market. The market for work by women is still less than the total sales for Picasso alone. Less than 10 percent of decision-makers at VC firms are women—and 74 percent of VC firms in the U.S. have zero women investors.

In one of the most prominent Tezos collecting events held in Twitter Spaces, the panel of art collectors was comprised of twenty-two men and TWO women.

Mmmmmhmmm.

The conversation that followed prompted the folks in our chat group to look at their collections and evaluate their collecting habits. We brainstormed how to balance out gender disparity in art collector panels and chatted about how to better support women in the NFT space. The women in our group shared their challenges and talked about what kind of support they needed. I LOVE that these conversations are happening in small groups – conversations amongst friends (even when everyone doesn’t agree) are so productive and a little support goes a long way.

Out of those conversations, Collectors Crew was born.

We held the first one yesterday and it was just…fantastic! If you missed it, you can listen to the recording right here! Empress, Vee, and Wonder were brilliant hosts and did a great job keeping things moving so that we could hear from as many artists as possible. Just gobsmacked by all the talent and lovely artists who showed up.

I was especially impressed with the number of artists who shared that it was their first week or so in the NFT space (we’re so early!). Talking in Twitter Spaces and sharing your art can be scary — even moreso when you’re new in a community and don’t know all the folks you’re chatting with.

(If you’re reading this and you’re new to NFTs: we’re all very friendly, don’t be nervous about requesting to speak/share!)

I added some fantastic pieces to my collection this week, let’s have a peek at them shall we?

Chucking Out Time by Soy Bien
Bee #Unicorn by Save the Crypto Bees
DNA #000 by Graphica
f64_ballet by maddiemonad
i’m losing my head by Lisa Martin
Municipal Building 1 by H.C. Turk
Music Unites by Empathetic Alchemy
Narwhal Dream by BillionNFT
onion glass by chearuutama
Sunset on a Solitary Pond by Adam Stewart
The Artist’s Dilemma by Riley Hutchins
Red Jam by Maria C.
どうぶつ by Sarisa Kojima D.

Some of these are works from artists whose work I’ve been collecting for a while (Soy Bien, Billi, Empathetic Alchemy). Others were from artists I love but didn’t have any of their work in my collection yet (H.C. Turk and Adam). All the rest were from artists I met through the Collectors Crew event.

I didn’t go into collecting this week with a strategy or looking for something specific…definitely more of an “ooooooh I love this buy buy buy” kind of energy. I realllly need to work on this for next week or I’m going to end up Tezos broke very quickly haha! Maybe I can try just listening, bookmarking, and then picking up pieces after the Twitter Spaces is over?

I’ve always got my eye open for super cute art like the bee and forest animals above and also fun work like the flamingo piece. I love collage and vintage imagery. My Tezos collection on Objkt is full of chaos and I LOVE it. Also just started collecting on Versum and I’m sure that collection will also turn into chaos…but when I start minting there I’m definitely going to use a better strategy than I did on HEN. 😉

Really looking forward to next week!
