Pinterest sections are here! How and why you need to use them.

November 11, 2017 by Jennifer 28 Comments

Spread the love ❤️

Pinterest sections are here! I’ve been looking forward to this new feature for ages and I’m so excited we finally get to have them!

I’ve been on Pinterest since beta and over the past 6 years I’ve pinned a LOT of projects. The boards I have right now are huge and the one I pin to most often has almost 4,500 pins in it. Eeek.

Adding sections to your Pinterest boards is a great way to organize the pins you already have pinned, and it’s super easy! It will make pinning easier (especially if you use the Pinterest app a lot like I do!) because you won’t have to scroll through a long list of boards to find the one you want.

I’m going to be adding sections to my crochet board. Here’s a little step-by-step tutorial so you can see how easy it is!

How to add Pinterest sections to your boards

There are a lot of different kinds of crochet. My favorite – amigurumi – makes up most of what’s on my crochet board. So the first step we’re going to do is open up the board and click “Add Section”.

Type in the Pinterest section name and click “Add.”

You’ll now have an empty section. To move pins from your existing board into that section, click “Organize” at the top right.

Click the pins you’d like to move into the section (they’ll have a red outline after you click them). Then click the “Move” button.

The new section name is now on that list! After you click “Save” your pins will be whooshed right into your new section!

When you scroll down, you’ll see that those pins are no longer mixed in with the other ones. In other words, Pinterest doesn’t make a copy of the pin when you move it into a Pinterest section, it actually moves the pin.

How to make a new Pinterest section from your home feed

Let’s get my Christmas crochet section started. I’m going to pin this adorable snowman wreath and I want to create a new Christmas crochet section while I’m at it.

After I click “Save” and scroll down to my crochet board, there’s now a little arrow next to it.

When you click that arrow, the Amigurumi section we made is already there, but we can also add a new section.

Just like before, you type your new section name and click “Add.”

Now when we go back and look at the board, there are two sections.

As Bob the Brain would say, easy peasy!

SO exciting!  Now I can have sections for Christmas crochet, and Halloween crochet, and crochet hats…it will be SO much easier to find things later when I’m ready to make them!

Important things to note:

  • Pinterest sections can be public or private, just like regular boards.
  • This feature doesn’t seem to be live in my Android app yet, but according to Pinterest it’s rolling out over the next few days.

Ideas for organizing your boards

There are lots of different ways to use this idea!

For a cooking board, you could add sections for appetizers, Instant Pot recipes, breakfast, lunch, dinner, etc. You could also create holiday or event specific sections like Thanksgiving recipes or menu ideas for a birthday party.

My baking board is a mess and has recently been overrun with gingerbread houses, so I’m definitely going to sort that into cookies, cakes, breads, and pastries sections.

If you pin lots of craft projects, you can now organize them by type within a general crafting board.

Teachers could use this feature to create a classroom ideas board and then organize it by season or lesson plan.

If you’re going your house a makeover, you could have one board for each room in the house. This will make it a LOT easier to remember which color swatch ideas belong with which room!

Ok. I am maaaaybe a little overexcited about Pinterest sections. My inner organizational nerd is doing a happy dance right now because I LOVE sorting data into categories. Cleaning up my Pinterest boards doing anything on Pinterest is a task I really enjoy!

Sometimes changes on Pinterest can be a little confusing, so I hope this tutorial helped you! If it did, please pin it (and maybe even add it to a section now that you know how to do it!) and share!

Pinterest sections are here! How and why you need to use them. This post has an excellent step-by-step photo tutorial to walk you through Pinterest's newest feature update. I'm SO excited about this change and it's definitely going to help you!

How will you use the sections feature?

Has anyone figured out how to move the sections around once you’ve created them? I really like things in alphabetical order, and I can’t seem to move the sections. They just stay in the order they were created in.

OoOOoOh Danielle that is a fantastic question! I agree – being able to alphabetize sections would be fantastic. I’m reaching out to Pinterest and will report back with my findings.

Thank you!! I haven’t been able to do it, so I deleted my sections and put them back in alphabetical order. But if you have a new section, you don’t want to have to do that all the time!!

Yes, there should be an easy way to reorder your sections! I haven’t heard back yet but when I do I’ll let you know.

Hi! You know, the Pinterest post I read said that we’d be able to make sections private, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to do it. I’ve pinged Pinterest on Twitter and sent them an email, but *crickets* so far. I will update you if/when I hear back.

I have been dying for this feature. So excited. Does anyone know if “sections” can be used on secret boards? It doesn’t appear so and I’m not turning up much while searching for an answer….Thanks!

Hi Sharon! Yep, you can use sections on secret boards. I just checked mine and the option is there. However, none of these features are working in my phone app yet, so if that’s where you’re trying to do it that might not work for you.

99% of my boards can’t be organized into sections. I know the feature works, but if effectiveness was 100% all of them would allow organizing…

Really? Wow, why do you think that is? Are they group boards?

It’s always a pain when new features get rolled out because this sort of thing pops up. And especially with Pinterest because it is nearly impossible to get in touch with anyone (even tweeting them doesn’t work!).

Forgive me if this was already covered, but do you know if you can use this on group boards? My first thought was to organize my wedding board now that I am getting into full planning mode. That way I don’t have to scroll through all of my pins to find flowers while at the florist.

I have like, several boards that are hardly active at all because I’m too much of a categorization freak to lump something in that doesn’t belong 🙈

I foresee a complete pinterest board makeover in my near future. I was so afraid of getting a board with thousands of pins that my entire pinterest account is a mess. Phew now i can remake it all.

Do you happen to know if there is a way to rearrange the sections once they are created? I’d like them to be in a different order than I created them in.

This is great, but I wonder if “real” people beta test. Love that you can add a section, but how in the heck do you organize the sections in the board? If your “anal” like I am, you want everything organized alphabetical, and unless I create the new sections in alphabetical order, [and never change] I’m screwed. Really need to allow sections to be organized within the main board & don’t use so much real estate, make the boxes smaller and grouped in a grin (like the main page). Other than that, I’m happy for the change and look forward to updates!

I was excited about this feature until I tried pinning to a section in a board. You can’t pin directly to a section! This means I’d have to pin everything twice if I wanted to put it in a section. No thanks.

Can the sections be reordered? I created a few sections just to try it out, and then realized I wanted the sections in a specific order, but can’t figure out how to do it.

Does anyone know if you can move an existing board over so that it becomes a subset of another folder? Example, i have a Spain folder and I also have several folders of cities in Spain so I could easily plan a trip. Was wondering if there was a wuick way to just drag or move my Madrid folder under my Spain board? Or, if I made another folder named Madrid and put it under Spain, can I do something like a SElect All to copy to nrw folder? I live this idea just trying to figure out fadt way to use.

I love this option for my new pins, but uggghhh! Why didn’t they do this from the beginning?? I’ve always split my boards into categories. I have large sections of boards “Good Eats:____”, “Holiday:_____” and thus, I have a crap ton of boards. I want to simplify and have less boards overall, but there is not an option to merge existing boards back into one with the sub categories within.

Oooof I feel you! There is a workaround though! First create a section in the group you want to move them too. Then you can move pins in bulk by choosing “select all”, then selecting the board/section you want to move them into. If you’re nervous about doing this, choose copy instead of move – that way you’ll still have your original pins where you wanted them to be if something goes wrong. Hope that helps you.

I e got my sections in the order I want for saving pins but when I want to open up the board to find something the sections are in a random order and I can’t find anything! Makes the whole thing useless if I’ve got a lot of sections.
