The Ultimate Rainbow Yarn Shopping Guide

September 4, 2017 by Jennifer 6 Comments

Hello everyone! I have a super awesome treat for you today!

Have you ever wanted to make one of those gorgeous rainbow yarn projects but weren’t sure where to start when choosing the colors?

If you’re like me, you’ve probably set out with good intentions a bunch of times. But when you get to the yarn shop, there’s a wall of gorgeous yarn and you can’t find just the right colors! So you pick some yarn up, put it down, swap colors around, and eventually give up and go grab some more yarn cakes.

Most stores don’t stock every single color in a yarn line. So, when that *perfect* shade of green just isn’t on the shelf you might think a rainbow can’t be done unless you substitute another brand (which might not work for your project).

Y’all, I’m solving that problem for you right now. I’ve made a TON of rainbow yarn shopping lists for you! They’re the perfect pinnable image size so you can pop them onto your board and have a handy dandy list ready for the next time you go to the store.

Or even better, just take that list straight to the online shop and get everything you need at once without having to try seven different stores!

We all like different yarn so I made primary and pastel rainbow yarn lists for the following:

  • Red Heart Super Saver
  • Caron Simply Soft
  • Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn
  • Cascade 220
  • Knit Picks Wool of the Andes Worsted
  • Lion Brand Pound of Love (pastel only, because primary colors aren’t available for this yarn)

All super yummy, super accessible yarns!

Onto the rainbow yarns! (Don’t forget to pin your favorites so you can find them later!)

Let’s start with Red Heart Super Saver:

I LOVE Knit Picks Wool of the Andes!

And Cascade 220 has an amazing range of colors! Β It’s my go-to for knitting hats.

Which ones are your favorite?

These are by no means the only rainbow yarn colors you can use! If there’s a shade you don’t care for, you can easily swap it out.

Knitting and crocheting is supposed to be fun! Don’t hesitate to play with your yarn! πŸ˜‰

Need some pattern ideas now? I got your back!

A rainbow Hugamonster might be nice!

Happy rainbowing!

I would love some help selecting Caron Simply Soft yarn to complete a double rainbow of 12 colors for my project. I’m trying to coordinate light and dark shades for each color to create a complementary rainbow. So far I think that the reds are Autumn Red & Harvest Red, the oranges might be Mango & Peach, the yellows Sunshine & Baby Sunshine, the greens perhaps Pistachio & Chartreuse, the blues probably Country Blue & Light Country Blue, and the purples Purple (I think it was) & Orchid. I’m especially questioning my orange and green choices. Also, I forget which dark shade of purple I chose, but there’s one that clearly goes well with Orchid. Any advice?
